Summary

The upsurge in home improvement programming in recent years has been tempered by an increasingly stringent regulatory environment. While the DIY market remains strong, homeowners are increasingly aware of the need for skilled and registered tradesmen to carry out critical tasks. On top of this, homeowners are demanding higher standards of workmanship and are looking for ways in which they can source competent and trustworthy tradesmen. Buildersite is an online resource which aims to bring together clients and small tradesmen and is initially for the domestic market. The Buildersite developers commissioned a QuickMark report to determine if a competitive advantage could be gained by an early move into the marketplace

Benefits

  • The report looked at the proposition and the perceived benefits and compared them with the existing competition.
  • Research looked in considerable depth at the market interest in identified target segments, specifically reporting on dissatisfaction within the homeowner market which has traditionally suffered from bad practice and poor workmanship.
  • “The QuickMark report challenged our assumptions about the potential marketplace,” stated Ryan Notz of Buildersite.
  • “At the same time it confirmed our plans to focus on business-to-consumer. The QuickMark report was very good value for money. The intangible benefits are many and I have no hesitation in recommending the service.”

Buildersite anticipated that their service will eventually attract larger companies and organisations to join its growing database of contacts.

It is likely that online solutions such as Buildersite will become more common place, however, while the market is still relatively young there are direct competitors.Historically, many good ideas for online services have failed due to lack of market knowledge and positioning.

Ryan Notz of Buildersite had a background in construction, having worked in stonemasonry and roofing. "While I understand the construction industry, I needed to be able to quantify the marketplace and needed in-depth analysis to take Buildersite forward." explains Ryan. "Also, my knowledge of the Internet is limited to that of an average user and as we were looking for funding, we needed good market research to support our plans."

QuickMark provides a fast initial market investigation to support business innovation. QuickMark is designed to identify broad market potential and pinpoint critical market issues for new product areas, processes or services. The possibilities include innovations in complex areas, new developments or new markets for an existing product, or new business streams for existing businesses. Using masters level researchers with access to a wide range of information, the process does not replace a full market research study, but is aimed to move businesses closer to making better decisions.
