The South West Science and Industry Council (SWSIC) and Science City Bristol will host the Innovation Nation Roadshow in Bristol in combination with a visit by Ian Pearson, Minister for Science and Innovation. The roadshow provides an excellent opportunity to see the innovative technologies being developed in the region and to find out more about government funding for R&D, skills and other government initiatives available to companies in the South West. Knowledge West will showcase some of its projects including QuickMark and the Non-Executive Directors Development programme.

The Bristol Environmental Technology and Services Expo will feature a number of plenary sessions including 'A new green industrial revolution - the challenge of climate change to business, cities and regions' and 'The business response to climate change - major regional, UK and international projects'. As sponsors at this year's BETS Expo, Knowledge West will showcase some of its projects including sustainable energies flagship, QuickMark and the Non-executive Directors Development programme.

10-11 April 2008
Knowledge West and the University of Bristol have developed a programme to support senior academics in becoming Non-Executive Directors. Following initial selection, including an introduction to the role and requirements of a Non-Executive Director, candidates join a 2-day residential course to strengthen their knowledge of the Non-Executive Director role. This course covers, in depth, the operational and interpersonal skills needed to be a Non-Executive Director. All candidates are then supported to identify and apply for Non-Executive Director placements.

The use of anaerobic digestion and biogas production has been headline news in recent months. The Governments drive to increase the proportion of energy generated from renewable sources, the potential economic opportunities biogas offers and the ability for producers of organic wastes to realise the intrinsic energy in the waste has generated great interest. In an attempt to improve the general understanding of what is involved in biogas production and the potential benefits it can offer users, SLR, with the support of the Maize Growers Association and the Renewable Energy Association, have organised a seminar to explain the background and the key issues involved in developing a biogas project.

Following the successful launch of the Bristol SkillSwap last year, Knowledge West is continuing the spread of this great program now into Gloucestershire. The Gloucestershire SkillSwap's first meeting is on 30th January 2008 and hosted by Kevin Hapeshi, Head of Information & Communications Technology at the Business School, University of Gloucestershire.

Knowledge West supports the Royal Agricultural College with Severn Wye Energy Agency to hold a seminar discussing the benefits of Biogas for Businesses. There are thousands of biogas (anaerobic digestions) installations around the world but very few are in the UK. The technology has huge potential to deal with waste, provide fertiliser and generate renewable energy.

The Knowledge West Enterprise Awards recognise and reward the best business ideas and new enterprises by students, staff and alumni from the six HEIs in West of England. Following judging of the business ideas submitted there will be an awards ceremony (by invitation only) together with buffet.
